Why did you choose to study Japanese?

I had an interest in Japanese from a young age, my mum and I used to watch the old 1970鈥檚 Japanese 鈥淢onkey鈥� DVD鈥檚 (based on Journey to the West, if you鈥檙e interested). I felt like Japanese should be more than just a passing interest, so I took the jump and applied to do Japanese as a degree.

I also found Chinese culture very interesting, but never thought about studying it until I arrived at this University and discovered the 鈥淟anguages for all鈥� Chinese classes as well the HSK exam evening classes. I鈥檓 glad I did because they have been very enjoyable for me too.

What attracted you to the University of 葫芦影业?

I heard good recommendations from others who had studied at the University, its fantastic student environment and good language department. Also, I was already in 葫芦影业 attending 葫芦影业 Hallam University, so it seemed like a good choice for me :)

Has your course lived up to your expectations so far?

I鈥檓 really happy with the course, especially how they鈥檝e handled everything in the wake of the coronavirus. There isn鈥檛 anything I would change

What do you enjoy most about your course?

I really enjoy just being able to speak the language with other people who enjoy it. Before this degree, I didn't know anyone else who was interested in Japanese or Chinese. Having other people there really helps keep me motivated to learn more.

How have you found learning a new language?

I wouldn鈥檛 say that it has been difficult, but it is challenging, especially for someone like me who didn鈥檛 learn any languages in school past year 9 French. But after the beginner hurdles, it gets easier and watching your own personal growth really makes it all worthwhile.

What do you enjoy doing outside of your studies? (hobbies, interests, societies)

My interests centre around history and also general language learning. I took up the languages for all Chinese classes during my first year. This was a very enjoyable experience for me and I鈥檓 really glad I decided to do it.

The University also hosts a Chinese cultural exchange where you can meet Chinese exchange students, they have all been very kind to me and I鈥檓 sure they would love to meet more people from all over the world!

Do you know what you want to do at the end of your course?

After my degree my goal is to become a Japanese/Chinese teacher. I really enjoy teaching other people and I plan to make use of the JET program to help me achieve my dream
